Can Pets Get COVID-19?

As your trusted partner in keeping your pets healthy, we wanted to reach out to you regarding the latest information on how the COVID-19 pandemic impacts you and your pet. Many of you may have heard the news of the tiger at the Bronx Zoo that tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19 in humans. The tiger was tested after many other tigers and lions at the zoo were exhibiting symptoms of a respiratory illness. It is believed these big cats contracted the illness from a zoo employee who was shedding the virus.

This case is the first of its kind and the USDA and CDC are keeping a very close eye on the situation. In the United States, no other animals (zoo animals, livestock, or personal pets) have tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 up to this point. There is currently no reason to believe that domestic animals, including pets, might be a source of infection of SARS-CoV-2 to humans. However, this is a constantly evolving situation, so it is recommended to take precautions to protect yourself and your pets.

If you or anyone in your household has tested positive for COVID-19, the CDC recommends taking the same precautions with any pets in the home as you would with other people. The infected person(s) should avoid contact with animals when possible, including feeding, cuddling, being kissed/licked, and sharing food. If the infected person(s) must care for pets in the home, it is recommended to wear a cloth facemask and wash your hands before and after any interaction. There is currently no recommendation for routine testing of animals, but some animals may be tested if local, state, and federal animal health officials deem it necessary.
